About the board

The Walhalla Board of Management Incorporated is a voluntary committee responsible for overseeing the management of historic and heritage-listed buildings and tourism assets, situated on the Crown land reserves within the Walhalla township and surrounding areas.

Walhalla is an historic gold mining town that attracts 140,000 visitors per year and has an exciting future as a key regional tourism destination in conjunction with nearby Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort.

The Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine was recently nominated for inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register, and the broader Walhalla goldfields landscape has been added to Australia's World Heritage Tentative List.

The Board currently manages the historic Walhalla Primary School, Old Post Office, Museum, the Mechanics Institute and Library Reserve, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, the Walhalla Goldfields Tourist Railway and Station Grounds and the Chinese Gardens Camping Ground.

About the role

The Walhalla Board of Management comprises up to nine members who bring together a variety of skills and experiences, to set the strategic vision and the practical management of one of Victoria’s most unique and historic townships. The Board’s role is to manage, protect and develop the portfolio of lands for their best use on behalf of the local and wider Victorian community. The Board’s portfolio of land includes the:

  • Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine
  • Walhalla Goldfields Railway and Station Grounds
  • Mechanics Institute and Library
  • Creek Cottage
  • Historic Post Office
  • Chinese Gardens Campground
  • Historic Walhalla Primary School

The term of appointment is three years commencing at the end of August 2025. Board meetings are typically held monthly at the Walhalla Mechanics Institute, with some meetings held remotely.

The Board wishes to attract people who value the diversity of Victoria’s communities and who have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Leadership and Governance Skills
  • Secretarial and Administration Skills
  • Financial Management
  • Marketing, Tourism and Media
  • Heritage Building and Asset Management
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Volunteer and Employee Management
  • Tourist Mine Management

Other desired skills and knowledge may include public sector governance, insurance, risk, and a knowledge of natural local environments and historic and heritage assets.
