About the role
The Minister for Energy and Resources is seeking applications for the position of the Mining Warden. The successful applicant will be appointed for a term of term of 3 years (working up to 3 days a week), commencing on 17 November 2025.
An independent statutory officer, appointed by the Governor in Council, the Mining Warden has an important role in mediating and resolving certain disputes relating to minerals exploration and mining, and may make recommendations to the Minister on matters under dispute.
The Mining Warden also investigates, reports on and may make recommendations relating to matters referred by the Minister or DEECA Secretary.
As the Mining Warden, you will work with diverse stakeholders and help ensure Victoria’s mineral resources are used in a way that is compatible with our economic, social and environmental objectives. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, especially in relation to sensitive matters. The Mining Warden is accountable to the Minister for Energy and Resources.
The Mining Warden is supported by a Registrar/Office Coordinator who provides office and administrative support, including acting as a first point of contact and providing technical assistance to the Mining Warden.
Who we're looking for
Applications are being sought from persons living in Victoria who have experience in mediation and alternative dispute resolution, and an understanding of minerals exploration and mining.
- To carry out the functions and powers of the Mining Warden, we are looking for applicants who have: ·
- Experience in conducting alternative dispute resolution, including in settling disputes through mediation, conciliation or arbitration. ·
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, especially in relation to sensitive matters. ·
- A sound understanding of the operation of legislation and the mineral resources sector, including the ability to understand the legal framework within which the Mining Warden operates. ·
- High-level analytical skills with the ability to conduct and report on investigations. ·
- A commitment to uphold the public sector values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, support for human rights, and leadership.
Given the skills and capabilities required of the role, applicants must have a tertiary qualification in law (i.e., a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)). Additional accreditation as a mediator, arbitrator or conciliator will be highly regarded.
Applications will be assessed and shortlisted against the key selection criteria outlined in the attached position description.
The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring that government boards, committees and appointments reflect the rich diversity of the Victorian community.
We encourage applications from women, people from rural and regional Victoria, people of all ages, Aboriginal people, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse, intersex and queer people.
