Public hospitals and multi purpose services (‘health services') are entities operating under the Health Service Act (Vic) 1988 and are integral to the Victorian health system. The board of a health service is accountable to the Minister of the day for the delivery of health care to a high quality, safe and in a cost-effective way.
About the role
These positions provide an exciting opportunity to contribute to the health and wellbeing of Victorian communities. Applicants are selected for their personal and professional experience, knowledge, and skills that will complement the board in providing strategic leadership and oversight of health care for Victorian communities.
The role of the board includes:
- setting the vision and strategy, in line with government priorities
- having ultimate accountability for the delivery of safe and quality care, including cultural safety and freedom from racism, discrimination, harassment and bullying
- having ultimate accountability of the organisational culture, including a workforce that feels safe
- oversight of the performance and delivery of key policy priorities
- ensuring the financial viability and sustainability of the organisation
- recruitment, support and monitoring of the Chief Executive Officer
Directors are required to attend a monthly board meeting of approximately 2-3 hours duration, to participate in at least 2 board subcommittees and be available for other events requiring board representation. While Victorian health boards are based on capabilities, boards are more effective when these capabilities also represent the richness of the diverse voices of the Victorian community. A diverse leadership of the health system that represents the variety of cultures and experience of Victorian communities enables the vision of achieving the best health, wellbeing and safety for everyone.
To build an empowered and engaged leadership across the health system, the priority areas are First Nations people, people who live with a disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and gender diverse, Intersex, Queer and Asexual (LGBTIQA+), gender equality and upholding human rights.

Remuneration
Bairnsdale Regional Health Service directors are paid $8,272 per annum. Directors of the other boards are paid a sessional rate of $262 per day.
