Victorian Interpreting & Translating Service (VITS) LanguageLoop is a Victorian Government-owned language services provider and a state business corporation. With a 50-year history of service at the forefront of the delivery of high-quality interpreting and translation services, LanguageLoop offers a network of over 3,600 professional interpreters who speak over 190 languages. It aims to support and promote equal participation and access for people with limited English proficiency in all aspects of a diverse Australian society. Language Loop speaks and engages with customers in any language, any time, across any platform, to help businesses and government bodies connect with their customers and communities across boundaries and cultures.

About the board

LanguageLoop is pleased to invite applications for a casual (sessional) position on the Audit and Risk Committee (the Committee). The Committee was established to review and provide advice to LanguageLoop on matters of financial accountability, internal financial controls, general governance matters, internal audit and risk management.

The Committee provides oversight and advice to LangaugeLoop in relation to:

• LanguageLoop's financial performance

• LanguageLoop's financial reporting processes

• matters of accountability and internal control affecting the financial operations of LanguageLoop

• development, operation and implementation of the LanguageLoop's risk management framework

• charter, scope of work, performance and independence of LanguageLoop's internal audit function

• effectiveness of management of information systems and other systems

• oversight of the overall approach towards fraud and corruption control

• review & monitoring of compliance with the Financial Management Act 1994, Standing Directions and Instructions, and advice to LanguageLoop compliance level attained

• review and monitoring of remedial actions taken to address compliance deficiencies.

About the role

LanguageLoop’s Committee comprises one independent member and four directors (including the Committee’s Chair). The vacancy is for an independent member (non-Chair).

Independent members are appointed for an initial three-year term. Terms may be renewed once only for an additional three-year term.

This member of the Committee is independent and is identified as independent in LanguageLoop’s annual report.

There are four Committee meetings per year. The meetings are usually held online via Microsoft Teams between 4pm and 6pm on the third Thursday of February, May, August and November. Some in-person commitments may be required with appropriate notice.

Along with its one independent member and four directors, a number of internal senior executive staff (CEO and Director of Corporate Services/CFO) attend the Committee, along with LanguageLoop’s internal auditors.

Who we're looking for

The successful applicant is required to have financial literacy including financial accounting and financial reporting skills and be CA or CPA qualified. Ideally, they will also have a background and experience working for other audit and risk committees, and be experienced in the following areas:

• a knowledge of the risks and controls relating to a government agency

• an understanding of a government agency’s internal audit function

• a proven ability to demonstrate an independence of judgment

• relevant industry knowledge or business experience in the public sector.

It is also desirable for an independent member to have a strong understanding of issues relating to Language Service Provision and CALD communities in Victoria.
