Purpose
The Solicitor-General is:
- the Second Law Officer of the State (after the Attorney-General);
- the State's primary legal adviser and advocate, they perform duties of counsel as the Attorney-General directs, and in particular, they represent the State in major litigation, especially in the appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and in the High Court; and
- Victoria's representative on the Special Committee of Solicitors-General (that considers constitutional and other legal issues of concern to all Australian jurisdictions).
