The VEC is an independent and impartial body established under Victoria's Electoral Act 2002, responsible for holding state and local council elections.
We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity by:
maintaining the register of Victorian electors (the electoral roll)
promoting public awareness and understanding of electoral issues
supporting the Electoral Boundaries Commission.
The VEC is also responsible for regulating electoral participants – voters, candidates and campaigners, registered political parties and others – to safeguard free and fair elections, and ensure transparency in electoral processes.
This is reflected in our regulatory approach. See https://vec.vic.gov.au/about-us/how-we-regulate.
About the Regulatory Advisory Committee
The Regulatory Advisory Committee (Committee) is an independent committee within the VEC's corporate governance structure and will provide independent expert advice, assurance, oversight and regular monitoring to support the VEC's regulatory work.
The Committee will advise the VEC about:
best practice in regulation
regulatory assurance and risk
emerging regulatory issues and trends.
Under the Committee's terms of reference, it comprises three independent members, one of whom will be appointed as the Chair, and a fourth member appointed from the VEC's existing staff.
Independent committee members will be appointed for a period of three years, commencing in July 2026. Membership may be renewed for further terms.
The time commitment for Committee members is approximately 25 hours per quarter (total 100 hours per year). This includes time required to prepare for and attend regular committee meetings and ad hoc meetings that are scheduled from time to time.
The Committee will meet at least once during each six-month period.
Meeting dates for the 2026-27 financial year are yet to be finalised. Ad hoc meetings will be scheduled as needed.
Meetings will be held in person at the VEC’s office at Level 11, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne or at another VEC location. Where it is not possible for members to attend in person, online options will be available.
Members will have access to an onboarding and induction program about the VEC, our regulatory functions and the role of the Committee to prepare them for their role.
