About the board

The Minister for Agriculture is seeking expressions of interest from a non-veterinary applicant Community Member to join the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria (the Veterinary Board).

The Veterinary Board is a statutory authority responsible for regulating veterinary practitioners in Victoria. The Veterinary Board's primary objective is to protect the public and the health and welfare of animals through the administration of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997. The Veterinary Board is appointed for a three-year period, which commenced in June 2022.

The Veterinary Board consists of nine members:

  • four registered veterinary practitioners (small animal, equine and production animal experience highly regarded);
  • one legal practitioner;
  • two non-veterinarians with experience in finance and business management, legal practice or the use of veterinary services;
  • one Victorian Government representative; and
  • a University of Melbourne employed registered veterinary practitioner.

About the role

Following the recent resignation of one of the non-veterinarian Board members, we are now seeking a non-veterinary applicant community member for the remainder of the three-year period until June 2025.

The Board works as a team and meets monthly to consider relevant matters, including registration of veterinary practitioners, investigation of complaints made against registered veterinary practitioners, setting guidelines for professional practice and general governance, and when requested provides information as required to the Minister. Meetings may also be convened outside the normal meeting schedule to consider urgent matters. Board members must ensure that they can devote sufficient time and commitment to properly perform their role and duties on behalf of the Veterinary Board. 


Who we're looking for

Applicants should have skills and experience in finance and business management, auditing, accounting, legal practice or the use of veterinary services.

Skills in the application of systems to deliver service benefits, commercial acumen and an ability to integrate financial and systems knowledge into a perspective on the enterprise would be an advantage.

Proven experience on tribunals and board governance would be advantageous. Other beneficial experience could include:

  • Board director with experience of serving on or leading a board finance or audit committee.
  • Commercial experience of working in a business that is run to generate profit.
  • Track record of role clarity and personal effectiveness as a non - executive director
  • Serving as a board, committee or executive member of a regulator
  • Appropriate qualifications such as a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors or the Corporate Governance Institute of Australia
