About the board

The Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is the archive of the State and local government in Victoria. We hold around 100kms of hard copy records and 600,000 digital records, dating from 1836 to present day.

Established under the Public Records Act 1973External Link PROV's objectives are to:

  • issue standards regulating the creation, maintenance and security of public records including the selection and disposal of public records not worthy of preservation
  • advise and assist agencies in achieving compliance with issued standards
  • preserve public records of permanent value as the state archives
  • ensure that the archives are accessible to the government and the people of Victoria.

PROV is an agency of the newly created Department of Government Services.


PROV is advised by a Council called the Public Records Advisory Council (PRAC).

Council members are appointed by the Minister for Government Services, Danny Pearson MP. The role of PRAC is to advise the Minister on matters associated with the Public Records Act 1973 and to provide a reference group of stakeholders for PROV.

The Council meets five times a year at a time that is mutually convenient to members. Two meetings a year are held in regional Victoria with the rest held at PROV's offices located at the Victorian Archives Centre, North Melbourne. Hybrid options are available to members who wish to attend meetings online.

This appointment is on an honorary, unpaid basis, with members being eligible for the reimbursement of expenses such as those related to travel to meetings.

About the role

There is currently a vacancy on the Council, and we are seeking expressions of interest from people with experience in Information Management and Recordkeeping. Experience within government agencies and professional or academic experience in information management is preferred.

The role of the Council member is varied, and the advice sought from Council members is dependent on issues that arise across government or within PROV at the time. Some of the issues that PRAC regularly advise PROV and the Minister on are:

  • Records at risk across the Victorian Public Sector and in the community
  • Retention and disposal of records
  • Recordkeeping legislation
  • Regional access to records
  • Records related to Indigenous people

Each Council member represents their field of expertise. We have Council members representing local government, Indigenous heritage, genealogy and local history, public administration, academic research and historical research.

You must provide an expression of interest that should clearly outline your qualifications and experience in your field (no more than 2 pages) and also include the following documentation:

  • Current curriculum vitae; and
  • Referees (names and contact phone numbers of at least two professional referees that can attest to the experience and expertise of the nominee).
