About the role
The Attorney-General, Jaclyn Symes, seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as a magistrate of the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria.
Magistrates are appointed by the Governor in Council, on the advice of the Attorney-General.
Expressions of interest are sought from people with substantial legal experience and knowledge of the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court, who have demonstrated a high level of integrity, sound judgement, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and the ability to conduct hearings. Required qualifications and conditions are set out in the Magistrates’ Court Act 1989.
Who we're looking for
Experience in criminal law, and/or civil/dispute resolution would be advantageous. Practitioners with experience in family violence are strongly encouraged to apply.
Following appointment, Magistrates commence at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. Thereafter, assignments of Magistrates to court locations across Victoria are made by the Chief Magistrate. Magistrates may be required to sit in regional Victoria for a period of up to three years. All expressions of interest are treated confidentially and may be drawn upon on an ongoing basis as vacancies arise.
