The Yuma Yirramboi Council (the Council) is a partnership initiative between the Victorian Government and Victoria's First Peoples. It is established and supported by DJSIR, the Victorian Government's lead agency in supporting economic growth, job creation, skills development, and regional development. DJSIR also plays a key role in facilitating partnerships and collaborations to drive strategic initiatives and deliver on government priorities related to economic and regional prosperity.
In 2022, the Victorian Government developed the Yuma Yirramboi (Invest in Tomorrow) Strategy (the Strategy). This ambitious, long-term agenda focuses on First Peoples employment and economic development. The Strategy envisions First Peoples generating greater individual and collective wealth through 6 strategic pillars: culture, people, business, wealth creation, jobs, and accountability. These pillars are essential for ensuring economic and employment parity for First Peoples in Victoria.
The Council membership brings together DJSIR Executives and a Koori Caucus comprised of 9 First Peoples experts. The Council is Co-Chaired by the DJSIR Secretary and the elected Chair of the Koori Caucus.
The Council supports this objective by strengthening First Peoples’ voice and leadership to government and industry – consistent with self-determination and First Peoples’ rights. The Council has the following roles in connection with the Strategy and the 6 pillars of First Peoples economic prosperity:
