About the board

LaunchVic Ltd is Victoria's startup agency, established by the Victorian Government in March 2016 as an independent agency responsible for growing the State's startup ecosystem to strengthen our economy, creating the jobs of the future. Through our work we are:

  • Supporting programs that build founder, investor, and talent capabilities
  • Driving improvements in the startup investment landscape by developing the angel investor and early-stage venture capital market in Victoria
  • Increasing the understanding and awareness of Victoria's startup ecosystem.

Operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, we have strong links with Victorian startup founders, Venture Capitalists (VCs), angel investors and community partners such as accelerators, co-working spaces and other service providers.

The LaunchVic team comprises 24 individuals (excluding Directors), many of whom have startup experience, and all of whom are passionate about growing the Victorian Startup Ecosystem.

Over the past 7 years, through our work, we have:

  • Established key startup supports including 14 pre-accelerators, 15 accelerator programs, CivVic Labs and the 30X30 Program for scaleups.
  • Established 9 angel networks, 6 VC funds, 2 investor education programs, the
    Alice Anderson Fund and the Hugh Victor McKay Fund.
  • Lead communications, marketing campaigns and events that have profiled the Victorian startup sector to a wide audience.

Outcomes of our work include:

  • Over 11,400+ entrepreneurs upskilled.
  • 1,016 startups supported, including 150 new companies created.
  • Activated over $830m+ of private capital.
  • Created 2,064 new jobs.

LaunchVic Ltd reports to the Minister for Economic Growth, the Hon Tim Pallas MP.

About the role

The LaunchVic Ltd Board is responsible for the overall governance, management and strategic direction of the organisation, and for delivering accountable corporate performance in accordance with the organisation's goals and objectives.

The Board works as a team and meets on a regular basis, at least six times per year. At least three meetings are in person and attendance is required at LaunchVic’s offices, with other meetings conducted via video conference. There are three Board Sub-Committees: Audit & Risk Committee, Investment Review Committee and People Committee. Each committee meets approximately quarterly, subject to workload. Each Director is expected to participate in at least two Sub-Committees, in addition to the regular Board meetings. Sub-Committee meetings are generally undertaken via video conference, however in person meetings may be required.

The LaunchVic Board currently consists of six members including the Chairperson.

All Directors terms expire on 30 June 2024. Three current Directors are eligible for a second term and are expected to be reappointed (including the Chairperson). Four board appointments are to be made through an open recruitment process, including an additional position to support the Board to fulfil its duties.

The Board is appointed by Cabinet via the Minister for Economic Growth.

The exact remuneration for the board position is $12,047 to $22,626.

Who we're looking for

LaunchVic Ltd is seeking four appropriately qualified candidates to recommend to the Minister for the vacant non-executive Director roles, with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Significant founder experience, exemplified by achievement of a significant ($100m+) company valuation or exit.
  • Early-stage startup venture capital investment governance and management.
  • Delivery of university commercialisation supports and/or entrepreneurship programs.
  • Development and enactment of commercial innovation strategy or policy, that resulted in significant economic outcomes.

Candidates will necessarily have startup sector knowledge and experience, having managed and/or oversighted startups, investments and/or commercial innovation programs.

Candidates will also ideally have experience and knowledge in best practice corporate governance and risk management in a high-risk environment. Previous experience as a Board Director will be highly regarded.

Board members are appointed on the basis of their skills and expertise. Each member holds office for up to four years and is eligible for re-appointment for one further term, subject to performance.

In addition to the above expertise and experience, candidates should identify their experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Accounting, Finance and Audit
  • Risk Management (in a high-risk environment)
  • Stakeholder engagement, including into Government
  • Strategy and innovation
  • Legal
  • People management including OH&S
  • Corporate governance – previous Board experience will be highly regarded.
