About the board

Exciting opportunity to join the Senior Victorians Advisory Committee

The Senior Victorians Advisory Committee (the Committee) is a non-statutory committee established by the Victorian Minister for Ageing to provide advice on the needs and rights of older Victorians, and to inform related government priorities and programs. The Committee will cease in 2027.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing invites members of the community to nominate to become a member of the Committee.

About the role

The Committee's work will focus on:

  • Promotion of rights and respect for older people
  • Providing a community voice to government with predominately older people as members of the group, including older people with lived experience of elder abuse or experiences that link to the issues that are relevant to older people.
  • Raising awareness of older people's positive contribution and meaningful participation in social, economic and cultural life, in addition to being important members of the community
  • Providing advice on implementation of the Ageing Well Action Plan 2022-2026 and the review of the Plan that is due to take place following the Plan's conclusion in 2026

Specifically, the role of the Committee is to highlight the community voice of older people through:

  • Lived experience of issues that impact an older person, such as financial insecurity (including cost of living pressures relating to essential services and accessing supports), elder abuse, intergenerational trauma, parental visa holders, job stability, job-seeking and workforce support opportunities, housing instability, social isolation and loneliness, digital exclusion, ageism, stigma and discrimination, neurodiversity, substance use and addiction and any other matters referred by the Minister.
  • Provide leadership on the needs and rights of older Victorians and to inform related government priorities and programs.
  • Experience of community involvement, volunteering experience, social events, sports and recreational groups participation.

The Committee will report to the Victorian Minister for Ageing.

Who we're looking for

  • Up to twelve committee members in addition to a community member chair, will be appointed to the Senior Victorians Advisory Committee by the Minister for Ageing.
  • Members must be based in Victoria and will be appointed based on individual experience, and not as representatives of specific groups or organisations.
  • People 60 years and over, and First Nations people ages 50 and over, can apply to join the committee.
  • Members should ideally feel comfortable sharing and communicating a range of views that are personal to them and taken from their life experience.
