The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is a regulatory body that oversees teacher registration in Victoria and regulates members of the teaching profession to ensure quality teaching and provide for the safety and wellbeing of children. It evaluates the suitability of applicants and registered teachers, conducts investigations into misconduct and incompetence, and accredits initial teacher education programs in Victoria.
The Council of the VIT provides oversight, governance and strategic direction for the operations of the VIT. This includes ensuring that the VIT's legislated functions of the VIT are carried out effectively and efficiently.
Council members are expected to:
Council meets approximately monthly resulting in a commitment of 10 full-days and some part days per year. Several meetings will be held in the Melbourne CBD, including a 2-day in-person workshop. The majority of meetings will be held online.
Council members are encouraged to participate in Council’s committee work averaging approximately 10 half days per year. Information about VIT’s committees is available at https://www.vit.vic.edu.au/about/governance.
Council members are ‘public officials’ under the Public Administration Act 2004. They are expected to act in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Directors of Victorian Public Entities 2024, which reflects the special role of the Council members and Chairperson, and the behaviours that exemplify the duties and values contained in the Public Administration Act 2004. The Code of Conduct is available on the Victorian Public Sector Commission website at www.vpsc.vic.gov.au.
All members of VIT Council are provided with a full induction program by VIT.
The Minister for Education invites expressions of interest from candidates to serve as a member of the Victorian Institute of Teaching Council.

The majority of Council members must be registered teachers.
Nominees for Council should have knowledge of, or experience in, management, finance, law and corporate governance to enable the Council to perform its duties and functions.
The period of this appointment is until 31 May 2028. All members are appointed on a sessional basis.
