About the board
Ambulance Victoria aims to improve the health of the community by providing high quality, safe, patient-centred pre-hospital care and medical transport. Ambulance Victoria currently provides emergency medical response to more than six million people across an area of more than 227,000 square kilometres.
Ambulance Victoria is an independent entity operating under the Ambulance Services Act (Vic) 1986 and is integral to the Victorian health system. The board is accountable to the Minister for Ambulance Services and is responsible for the health, wellbeing and safety of the organisation's people – ensuring staff and volunteers are working in a safe, fair and inclusive culture. Overseeing implementation of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission's Review is a key priority for the Ambulance Victoria Board.
About the role
The Minister for Ambulance Services is pleased to invite persons to apply for part time board director positions of Ambulance Victoria. The positions start on 1 July 2024 and appointments are for a period of up to three years.
These positions provide an exciting opportunity for Victorians to contribute to the strategic leadership and direction of pre-hospital care and transport for the Victorian community. Applicants are selected for their capabilities, including personal and professional attributes, experience, knowledge, and skills that contribute to the strategic leadership and oversight of health care of the organisation.
The board meets on the first Monday of each month typically from 10am-3pm. Directors are also required to participate in board committees and be available for other events requiring board representation. Please refer to the position description for further information, including remuneration.
The role of the board includes:
- setting the vision and strategy, in line with government priorities
- having ultimate accountability for the delivery of safe and quality care, including cultural safety and freedom from discrimination, harassment and bullying
- oversight of the performance and delivery of key policy priorities
- ensuring the ongoing financial viability of the organisation
- recruitment, support and monitoring of the Chief Executive Officer

While Victorian public health boards are based on capabilities, boards are more effective when these capabilities also represent the richness of the diverse voices of Victorian communities.
People of all ages, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, people of all abilities, people from multicultural diverse communities, people who identify with LGBTIQ+ communities are encouraged to apply.
The key capabilities which Ambulance Victoria are looking for are:
- Audit and Risk Management
- Financial management and accounting
- Clinical governance (particularly performance management)
- Human resource management (specifically change management)
