Purpose
The Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority and its Board are established under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990. The function of the Authority include coordinating rehabilitation planning for declared mines, deemed by the Minister to pose a significant risk to public safety, the environment and infrastructure. The Authority has oversight over the implementation of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy and engaging and informing the community about rehabilitation of declared mine land and the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy. The Authority advises the Minister on the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy and post-closure maintenance of declared mine land, and can carry out investigations at the Minister's request. The Authority is also empowered to acquire and dispose of declared mine land after rehabilitation is complete.
